We were strongly discouraged by our travel agency to go to Xi’an but we then booked our train tickets through another one and went anyways. We are so happy that we went and here are some reasons why, even if you do not want to see the terracotta army. Bird market – not so much fun for us but interesting to see
Streetfood – the muslim quarter is lively, colorful, noisy and full of streetfood. There is something for everyone. Awesome bread, meatballs, lots of grilled and deepfried things on a stick (meat, seafood, veggies, fruit), dessert, spicy grilled tofu, chinese burgers……. You may find not everything tasty but it is an adventure to find our what you like best and what not to get again.
The city wall – you can hike it or bike it. Nice views and atmosphere.
Big wild goose pagoda – spectacular light-music-fountain show at 8:30pm but really crowded. On the opposite site there was a square where people met for all kinds of dancing. Great vibe there!
There is also the great mosque, which is built in a chinese style. We did not get a chance to go inside just took a quick peak. And quite a few monastries, museums and lots of sights close to the city. And if you are more into nature, you can go hiking on the nearby Li mountain or the little further away Huashang mountains. Drum and bell tower at night
There are many reasons to come here and stay a little longer, especially when the weather is great. Our main reason were the warriors and we were happy we went. We found it really astonishing but everyone has to find out for themselves.
Our last day in Xi’an was really rainy and wet, so we decided to take it slow and relax at the hostel before we took our next night train. It was a great coincidence that we met someone from the train to Beijing again and we talked and we went to the muslim quarter to try some streetfood together. A couple days before we went to the terracotta army and ran into a teacher and her really nice and well-behaved class we had met in the hostel in Beijing. I guess it is true, you always meet twice.
Our hostel was great, too. Good breakfast, free railway station pick up, awesome staff, dumpling party and good location, we can recommend a stay at the Hantang Inn Hostel. The hostel husky
